ABOUT

The name Workshop Engineers is rooted in our passion for exploring new ideas and maintaining a strong connection to the materials and process of building.

With a specialization in new designs led by architects, we value each project as a unique opportunity to support the architectural vision and contribute to our community with elegant, economical structures. We are inspired by the craft of building, and take great pleasure in using materials in a manner that leverages their unique properties to design modern structures that will stand the test of time. With past project experience encompassing a broad range of building types and materials, Workshop Engineers is primed to be a meaningful contributor to any design team seeking to create an outstanding solution.

As friendly and approachable structural engineers, we understand the importance of communication and teamwork in the design process. We pride ourselves in being hands-on professionals that provide ongoing support through all phases of design and construction. No matter the scale, we treat each of our clients and projects with care.

Based on Vancouver Island on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Hul’qumi’num Treaty Group and W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations, we offer structural engineering services throughout British Columbia, the Pacific Northwest, and wherever else the projects take us.

Davin Lewis

Partner

With experience on projects ranging from small artwork installations and single-family residences to large civic, commercial, and tall timber buildings, Davin has developed a versatile knowledge of structural engineering.

Davin spent his formative years on beautiful Vancouver Island and earned an Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology in Victoria, BC. He then received a B.A.Sc. with Distinction in Civil Engineering with a focus on structures from UBC in 2012.

Prior to and while attending university, Davin worked as a carpenter building homes from the ground up. With this experience in tow he brings a hands-on, thoughtful approach to even the most adventurous designs. Before Workshop, Davin was the founding office leader for Fast + Epp’s Seattle branch office. He is a licensed engineer in British Columbia and Washington State.

When not engineering Davin can be found out biking on the nearby Trans Canada Trail, creating small woodworking projects and spending time with his son and daughter.

Thomas Duke

Partner

Thomas has a passion for physics and the built environment. He moved to Canada from Oregon in 2009 to study structural engineering at the University of British Columbia. Since graduating, Thomas has gained valuable design experience working with several structural design consultancies in Vancouver, BC.

Before starting Workshop Engineers, Thomas spent four years working at Fast + Epp Structural Engineers. During that time Thomas had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of architecturally expressive projects including custom homes,  libraries, hospitals and commercial buildings of steel, concrete, and timber construction.

Thomas enjoys collaborating and approaching structural design with a creative and open mind. He is personable and brings a positive attitude and fresh thinking to any design team.

Outside of the office, Thomas enjoys fly fishing for steelhead, rafting, foraging for wild mushrooms, vintage cars and hiking with his dog. He spends as many nights sleeping in his tent as he can.
